Step for Life / Trainee
Trainee programme in East Africa, year 2009-2011
The overall goal with the trainee programme is to assist a total of 12 young people in the period of year 2009-2011 with an interest in mission
and humanitarian/development work by providing opportunities in working alongside experienced
national staff engaged in humanitarian/development activities in East Africa and through
information sharing activities in Sweden during a 5,5 months trainee period with
International Aid Services (IAS).

The objective with the trainee grant
1
To assist young people with an interest in mission and humanitarian/development work by providing opportunities
in working alongside experienced national staff engaged in humanitarian and development activities in countries in the South.

To experience other cultures.

To be able to influence people in Sweden on mission and humanitarian/development issues in the South when returning home after the trainee period.
Trainee assignment
Upon return to Sweden each trainee will be required to;
1
Talk about the trainee period in the local church/organisation.
(Minimum 1 meeting per trainee)

Visit school classes and share the experiences.
(Minimum 3 lectures per trainee)
3
Use local media, radio, newspapers etc.
(Minimum 1 article per trainee)
Requirements for receiving the trainee grant
This programme in funded by Swedish Mission Council (SMC) and is open for Swedish Citizens.
- Swedish citizen
- Age of 18 - 35 years (recommended age 23 - 35 years)
- Trainee period of 5,5 months
- Trainee grant can only be obtained ones by the same trainee
- Completion of culture introduction course at Sida, Härnösand

During the timeframe of year 2009-2011, IAS offers six trainee periods in total.

Preparations: 1 - 31 Jan (1 month)
In the field: 1 Feb - 15 May (3,5 months)
Follow up: 15 May - 15 June (1 month)
Deadline to apply: 30 November 2008
Second
period
Year 2009 5,5 months
1 August 2009 - 15 January 2010
Preparations: 1 - 30 Aug (1 month)
In the field: 1 Sept - 15 Dec (3,5 months)
Follow up: 15 December - 15 January (1 month)
Deadline to apply: 1 April 2009
Third
period
Year 2010 5,5 months
1 January - 15 June 2010
Preparations: 1 - 31 Jan (1 month)
In the field: 1 Feb - 15 May (3,5 months)
Follow up: 15 May - 15 June (1 month)

Preparations
- Read information about IAS
- Read information about the country for the trainee period
- Attend the 2 weeks course at Sida in Härnösand (Read about course)
In the field
- Be part of the day to day activities one of IAS' locations in East Africa
- Experience other cultures, traditions, relief and development activities
Follow up
- Talk about the trainee period in the local church/organisation
- Visit school classes and share the experiences
- Use local media, radio, newspapers etc
